OEM vs. Aftermarket: When Paying More Costs You Less

This is the most common scenario for dozer parts like filters, belts, or undercarriage components. You're not staring at a broken machine; you're doing scheduled maintenance. Your deadline is flexible—maybe a week or two.

In this case, OEM Caterpillar parts are almost always the better financial decision. I know that sounds counterintuitive—OEM costs more upfront. But here's the thing: when you calculate total cost of ownership (TCO), OEM often wins.

In Q2 2024, I compared quotes for a set of undercarriage parts across three vendors. Vendor A (OEM dealer) quoted $3,800. Vendor B (aftermarket) quoted $2,950. I almost went with B until I checked their warranty terms: 6 months vs. OEM's 24 months. The OEM parts also included installation support documentation. The difference?
